Hi all. I decided to collect all the data about the modem mode in one place. The funny thing is that for 4 years we have never written about this topic on our website ... I am correcting myself.

Hotspot mode allows you to connect computers and devices to the Internet through your device's cellular data network. Hotspot mode is available on the following devices: iPhone 4 and above (3G and 3GS under certain conditions), iPad 3 Wi-Fi Cellular (or later), iPad Mini Wi-Fi + Cellular (or later).

Turn on tethering

By default, modem mode is disabled. To enable modem mode, you need to:

1. Settings-> cellular-> Cellular Data - turn on the switch.

Settings->Cellular->Enable LTE - if such a switch is available.

2. Settings-> Cellular-> Tethering-> Tethering. You need to turn on the switch. For the first time, the device will prompt you to turn on Bluetooth or use only USB / Wi-Fi. That is, the Internet can be distributed not only via Wi-Fi, but also via USB and Bluetooth.

If a simple password is entered here by default, then change it to a more complex one.

Connecting other devices

Connecting another device to the internet using Wi-Fi tethering is now a breeze. We find among the Wi-Fi networks the desired one - it will be with a chain icon. We drive in the password. Done - the second device is now using the Internet of the first.

On the device that distributes the Internet, the status bar will turn blue. And the line will be written in it: "Modem mode - connections: 1". If you have 1 device connected via modem mode, and the number is higher, then someone else has connected to your Internet. You should not panic - most likely, some device nearby that connected earlier automatically hooked up to the network ... dispensing device.

Important point! A Wi-Fi connection cannot be used to access the Internet while other devices are using the Wi-Fi network in tethering mode. General access can only be granted to a cellular data connection, not WiFi networks.

Tethering mode setting

Hotspot mode is missing on some iPads and iPhones after iOS 8.0.2 update. I personally saw this problem on the iPad Mini 1. After that, I decided to write this instruction. This is a bug! To fix it, you just need to drive the APN settings into the appropriate places.

Settings->Cellular->Cellular Data Network. In chapter Modem Mode enter the settings of your operator.

From iphone, you can make a wi-fi router and distribute the Internet to other devices. Very useful when you are away from home if your laptop does not have a 3G modem. In this article we will talk about how to enable the mode iPhone modem, as well as some of the problems that you may encounter in the process.

After that, the mobile device will turn into a mobile access point and will begin to "distribute" the Internet. It will be possible to connect to it via Wi-Fi using the password that is displayed in the mode settings.

Be careful: the wi-fi modem mode is not displayed anywhere. But the battery on your phone drains faster.

When another device connects to you, you will see such an inscription on the status bar.

Setting up another device connection

To connect to the created wi-fi network from another device, go to the network settings on this device. Select the name of the wi-fi point that you set in the settings. And enter the access password.

This is how it looks like connecting to an iPhone on a MacBook. On other devices, the connection icons will be identical.

It is worth highlighting several main features of using the modem mode:

  • Don't wait high speeds because the Internet connection is through the mobile network.
  • When the modem mode is activated, the autonomy of the mobile device is slightly reduced.
  • Some operators mobile communications may impose some restrictions on the number of simultaneous connections to one device.

What to do if hotspot mode on iPhone cannot be activated

In some cases, users will need to swipe to activate tethering mode. advanced settings. It depends on the cellular carriers. In particular, here is an article on how to enable yota modem mode. The general principle is this:

iOS 9 users report a bug specific to this version of the system: when upgrading to iOS 9, the Modem Mode disappears. The problem manifests itself differently depending on the mobile operator whose SIM card is installed in the device. For some, the function disappears from the settings menu, for others it does not work or does not work correctly.

Why the "Tethering Mode" feature disappeared

The problem of the function not working properly has nothing to do with hardware defects or device features, therefore it manifests itself the same on all iPhones. Most often the error occurs after upgrading to new version operating system. As it turned out, the failure occurs due to resetting the configuration settings of the cellular operator.

Usually the configuration is set automatically, the necessary data is contained in the memory of the SIM card. But when the system is updated, the setting is reset, so the "Modem Mode" does not work.

How to fix a bug and return a function

The algorithm for solving the problem will be the same for all versions of iOS: you need to configure the APN for modem mode yourself.

APN (from English Access Point Name, access point name) is a unique name and at the same time the address of the access point through which the user connects to the network. Accordingly, a username and password are required to gain access to the APN. The cellular service provider reads these settings and assigns the correct IP address to the network, connects to the appropriate security gateway, and determines whether to set up a connection through private networks. In our case, when using the modem mode, the device transmits access to its telecom operator over the Wi-Fi network to other devices.

Data for setting the modem mode - table

Other causes of the problem

Cellular carrier restriction

If the problem is not solved APN setting, then the lack of "Modem Mode" may be due to the limitation of the cellular operator.

Some operators prohibit distributing the Internet to other devices on their unlimited tariffs.

Error while updating

If in tariff plan there is definitely no restriction on the transfer of Internet traffic to other devices, then the lack of "Modem Mode" may be due to an error that occurred when updating the device. In this case, you should try to "reflash" operating system, that is, reinstall the same version of iOS.

When flashing the system, the settings are reset to factory settings. Therefore, it is recommended that you first backup your files using iTunes and save them to your computer so that you can restore them later.

Device failure

If the flashing did not help, then the problem is related to malfunctions in the hardware of the device. The modem module may be defective. In such a situation, it remains only to contact service center Apple.

How to Enable "Tethered Mode" on iPhone or iPad - video

The problem with the incorrect operation of the "Modem Mode" in the ninth version of iOS in most cases is solved extremely simply: just enter the username and password to the access point of the mobile operator. If this does not help, then contact the Apple service center, they will certainly find the error and fix the problem.

I think many of you have been in a situation where there is a regular PC or laptop nearby, but there are no Internet access points on it. And access to the network at the same time is very necessary from a computer. If you have your own iPhone, then it will help you solve this problem using the modem function.

In this article, we'll talk about how to enable modem mode, if you have it in the settings. There are still cases when this item is simply hidden in the menu, and if you have a similar case, then you will learn how to return this setting. The only thing you need is access to the network on your iPhone (preferably unlimited, since you simply won’t notice how you will go into a huge minus on your balance).

How to enable hotspot mode on iPhone

To do this, follow the following instructions:

  1. Go to "Settings".
  2. Click "Cellular" and there are two scenarios here: you see the item "Modem Mode" or it is not there, but we'll talk about this later.
  3. Go to Cellular Data Network. It often happens that this setting is at the very bottom, so scroll to the very bottom. Then you will see the blank fields "Name, password APN". You need to enter any username (this will be enough).
  4. Now in the settings the active “Modem mode” should already appear. If it is in an inactive state, then go back to the "Cellular" item and turn on the modem.
  5. "Modem mode" is turned on and all that remains is to connect to it through another device and use the Internet.

Function setting via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB

Apple developers took care of their users in advance and made it so that you can distribute access to the World Wide Web via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB, which is quite convenient and easy. Let's look at each of the methods in more detail.

Connecting "Modem mode" via USB

If you have Windows 7 and older or Ubuntu installed on your computer, then you can easily set up your iPhone as a modem via USB, just follow the instructions below:

  1. Connect the phone via cable to the computer and you will usually see a window with a choice of programs to run. Just close it, because it doesn't matter for setting up the Internet.
  2. Go to "Settings" and go to modem mode, there you will see the item "Shared USB tethering". After turning it on, your computer is in Internet sharing mode.
  3. To disable this mode, simply turn off the Shared USB tethering feature on your phone and disconnect the USB cable from your computer.

Modem mode connection via Bluetooth

Apple technology can also support network access via Bluetooth, and to set up such a connection, follow the instructions:

  1. Connect your phone and computer via Bluetooth data connection.
  2. Set up an Internet connection via Bluetooth on your computer (how to set it up correctly depends on the computer model, so for this information it is better to refer to the instructions that come with the computer).
  3. On your phone, go to the "Settings" menu and turn on "Tethering Mode".
  4. Enable Shared USB Tethering. Your phone and computer are now in shared mode.

Connecting "Modem mode" via Wi-Fi

Making it so that your phone distributes the Internet via Wi-Fi is very easy, and you will see for yourself now. To do this, follow the instructions:

  1. Open "Settings" and go to the "Tethering Mode" menu.
  2. Find the "Wi-fi hotspot" function and activate it. Now the phone will be able to distribute the Internet via Wi-Fi to which up to eight users can simultaneously connect.
  3. To disable the distribution of Internet access, do everything in reverse order.

Additional Information

In modem mode, when another device is connected to you, the status bar changes color to blue and displays the number of connected devices, which makes it easy to monitor the status of the Internet distribution.

It should also be remembered that when distributing access to the network via Wi-Fi, only the cellular data network will work.

As you can see, there are many ways to distribute the Internet through your phone. Each method works the same way and does not require additional knowledge. Everything is set up quickly, and in a couple of minutes you can turn your iPhone into an Internet access point.
