The word “reporting”, familiar to many, comes from the French “reporter” - “transfer”, and English - “report”, which literally means “report, report”. It is easy to guess that, in the truest sense of the word, a reporter or journalist is a person who “moves” news events from the real world to the paper or virtual world.

A photo essay presents these events to the viewer not through words and intonations, but through images, visual perception of images. In other words, this is a story about an event in photographs.

The photo essay is interesting in that it is impossible to stage a shot in it, it excludes staged shooting. Photographer captures moments real life in a whirlwind of events, must be able to see the most successful angle, is in the thick of what is happening. And the main feature of such photography is its documentary. In addition, the photographer does not have the opportunity to take a second frame, a double of the same moment.

Types of reportage photography

In the genre of photo-reportage, two types can be conditionally distinguished, sometimes closely interconnected with each other:

  • event;
  • Everyday.

The first is an event report. This is shooting of all kinds of events - premieres, competitions, various forums, presentations, holidays, etc.

The second is an everyday type of reporting, which reflects the events of ordinary life in its everyday moments, familiar to many.

Photo essay features

A photo essay can consist of one single frame, which reflects the entire plot of the event, or be in the form of a photo essay, a series of pictures. It doesn’t matter if the events are sequential or occur in a chaotic way, the main thing is that they are united by one common theme.

The photo essay allows the photographer to convey a more connected and complete narrative. To make it easier for the viewer to perceive and understand the course of events, the material is filmed according to a simple scheme similar to a film script: beginning, development, culmination and finale.

Shooting in this genre is not the easiest, and not so much because you need to be in good shape all the time, catch the moment, be attentive to the details of what is happening and generally assess the situation, looking for the best places for shots.

Event reporting, for example, is not only shooting joyful moments and events. Event reporting also includes filming of funerals, accident and disaster sites, strikes, as well as armed clashes and even military operations. Often, in addition to a heavy emotional burden, the work also poses a threat to the life of the photographer.

However, in addition to reporting from the "hot spots" of our planet, photojournalists cover sports events and concerts, public speeches and holidays, conferences and exhibitions. In addition, this genre is often used for shooting home events: weddings, proms, children's matinees and birthdays.

A high-quality photo essay keeps in memory the most significant events, impressions, emotions, moods and experiences. And the photographer is faced with the task of snatching and capturing the brightest moments in the picture, creating a complete picture of what is happening.

Interesting publications on the site

Today, photography as an art is at the peak of popularity. With the development of technology, the availability of information, shooting people and objects on the camera is filled with a completely new meaning. Even 2-3 decades ago, the services of a photographer were resorted to only on the most solemn occasions, and this type of photography was in demand as much as possible. And if in those days only the elite could afford a real SLR camera, today the majority of those who wish have the opportunity to self-realize with the help of photography. Genre photography is also gaining popularity, when the photographer sets himself the task of not only capturing the events taking place, but also making each picture artistically filled. After all, life itself throws up stories that you want to sing in monochrome or color: the touching fragility of the bride, the insecurity of the newborn, the beauty of the native land, the wisdom reflected in the eyes surrounded by wrinkles, the play of sunlight on the plank floor...

It is probably impossible to say exactly how many species there are, and examples of the work of the best photographers often combine several areas, combining techniques inherent in a completely different types shooting. And, nevertheless, among the whole variety of styles, several of the most popular can be distinguished.

Reportage

With the advent of new trends in the art of photography, the classics do not lose their relevance. This type of photography, like a reportage, will probably always be relevant. Photojournalists have always been and will be where the most fateful events take place, so that the whole planet can learn about them in a timely manner. Reportage photography, like journalism in general, can also be divided into subspecies, depending on the subject.

Here the most common type of photography is news, reflecting current events in the world. Among those who cover the news, military correspondents keep a little apart, because their work is full of dangers and risks, and their camera lens often gets something that not everyone can handle.

One thing unites all subspecies - impartiality, atmosphere, the need to maintain maximum objectivity.

Wedding

Once upon a time, it was quite possible to attribute to reportage shooting wedding photo session. Today, this type of photography has completely modernized. Modern newlyweds pay special attention to the first - a wedding photo album. Often a whole team of professionals works on it. The task of a wedding photographer is to notice and reflect the depth of feelings that lies in two hearts. Therefore, such trifles as clenched fingers, fluttering eyelashes, excited glances often fall into his frame ... And how eloquent goosebumps on the skin!

A true professional will definitely notice everything important, while not forgetting the main thing. After all, in no case should he miss the unique moments of painting in the registration book, putting on rings, the first marital kiss.

Children in the frame

It is not known exactly how many types and genres of photography exist, but children's photosets can be safely called one of the most popular. It would seem, what could be easier? Brightly dressed models with funny curls do not need the services of make-up artists, dressers and decorators. The charm of childhood just begs to be framed! And the variety of emotions that only babies are capable of can be envied even professional models. However, this type of photography requires much more skill from the photographer than any other types and genres of photography. With illustrative examples of impudent childish posturing or, conversely, stubborn unwillingness to pose, probably everyone who has tried to capture their own child on camera at least once is familiar. Therefore, professionals often use various means to find a common language with small models: turn on suitable music, allow them to play with props, treat them with sweets, decorate the lens and camera with funny faces and little animals. What can I say, even if the well-known supposedly flying bird was invented many years ago in order to draw children's attention to the lens!

But those who managed to reach an understanding with the kids are well aware of how grateful this audience can be. Children are beautiful in their spontaneity, interesting in themselves, so photographs of them - dirty, overplayed, disheveled, crying and laughing - often look like illustrations for good old fairy tales.

love story

New types of photographs are also gaining popularity. An example of this is Love Story, love stories captured on film. As props, cute trinkets that are important for two lovers are often used: notes, plush toys, seashells picked up on the beach, CDs with special songs ...

Objects that have become common for two help to emphasize the mood, for example, paired jewelry or two straws stuck in one glass.

landscape photography

Such types of photographs as a landscape will never lose their relevance... The subject is given by nature itself, and the skyline of a tropical island, and familiar look from the balcony. Here, perhaps, as in no other genre, it is important to work with light - so that the sky does not lose depth, so that the bright sun's rays do not give too sharp shadows, so that not a single detail escapes ...

A subspecies of landscape photography can be called shots from travels, which will later take their place in the road album, helping to preserve memories of impregnable mountains, gentle sea, distant shores.

Still life

Once upon a time, this type of photography could almost be called educational. They resorted to it mainly to hone the skill of composing and working with shadows.

Today, this species is extremely popular not only among photographers, but also among those who create man-made masterpieces. Masters strive to present their product in the best possible way, resorting to the help of professionals.

Animal world in the lens of the photographer

The friendship of man and animal has attracted the keen eye of the photographer for a long time. Animals often pose with pleasure.

In addition, cute fluffy faces often penetrate other types and genres of modern photography, such as portraiture. And if a few years ago 99% of the popularity belonged to seals, today at the works of masters one can often see such exotic things as snakes, iguanas, scorpions, owls.

Attract photographers and dogs. For example, northern handsome huskies, samoyeds and malamutes, which have absolutely incredible facial expressions.

Thematic sets

Another new type of photography is thematic photography. Here, the photographer can show his talent from all sides. He can not do without scenery and props. The idea is to create a series of shots united by a common theme. Often based on a famous fairy tale, movie, history. Models can try on absolutely incredible roles: the Mad Hatter and Alice, Vakula and Oksana, Snow White and the Dwarfs...

Thematic shooting techniques often penetrate into other types of photographs: children's, wedding, portrait. An indicator of special skill here is your own vision, an unusual interpretation, and not a simple illustration of the plot.

Surrealism

Not so long ago, the types and genres of modern photography have replenished with a completely unusual direction. It's about surrealism. Many fans of this art call it not just photography, but the creation of new worlds. Of the masters working today in Russia, Oleg Oprisko occupies a special place. He managed to create own views photos. Examples of Oleg's work allow you to see familiar things in an incredible, magical perspective.

No less famous is the photographer Katya Plotnikova, who also works in this genre. Incredible fairies and outlandish animals look at us from her works.

High and low key

These types of shootings (photographs) are presented mainly in the portrait and subject genres. Rather, high and low key can be called photography techniques, rather than types of photography, but most experts consider them to be a special direction in photography. When working in this genre, the master focuses on working with light and shadow. Shooting in low and high key is carried out in a special studio, equipped not only with lighting devices, but also with special reflective screens.

High key implies a special color scheme of the image. Its main tone is white, and the dark areas, in the language of professionals, are within the second step of the light gray color of the seven-step density scale.

Low key, on the contrary, sings of deep black. Only that part of the image that carries the main semantic load remains highlighted to light gray.

macro world

Such genres of photography (with examples of photos), like macro photography, can mislead the layman with their unusualness. Sometimes it is difficult to understand what is shown in the picture: the delta of a huge river or the circulatory system of a newborn, patches of ripening fields from a bird's eye view, or a pattern on a moth's wing?

For macro photography, special lenses with magnifying lenses are used. The skill of the photographer, who was able to see the smallest, allows a simple man in the street to see what is often hidden from his gaze.

Astrophotography

At all times, the starry sky beckoned people! Not surprisingly, it often gets into the lenses of cameras. And unusual celestial phenomena, such as eclipses, arrivals of comets and asteroids, the special color of the moon and the incredible brightness of the Milky Way, certainly do not leave indifferent fans of astrophotography.

nude

Some types of modern photography originate in ancient times. Speaking of shooting in the Nude style, one cannot help but recall the great artists of past centuries who sang the natural beauty of the human body. In a broad sense, the main subject of shooting in this genre is the naked body. However, many masters often cover the nakedness of models with the help of draperies and translucent veils, curtains, screens, thus leaving some kind of understatement and intrigue in the picture.

This genre is special. In it, as in no other, it is necessary to feel the line between art and vulgarity.

street photo

Speaking about what types of photography exist, it is worth mentioning another unusual genre. It's about street photography. This direction appeared quite a long time ago, more than a century ago. Ideologists of street photography call this genre the most sincere and reliable, and the work of a photographer here requires special skill. After all, it is intended only to follow the life of the city, to notice the most interesting and striking moments, to discover unusual images.

Street photography tells us not only about the characters, but also about their life in the environment. Everything is important here - buildings and trees, birds and trash cans, umbrellas over cafe tables, hurrying taxis, street vendors...

Photo art and its prospects

Contemporary art lives a special life, absorbing and reflecting all aspects of life around. Types and genres of photography are replenished every day with new directions and trends, complementing each other. The development of technology allows not only to get acquainted with the work of the best masters of the world, but also to use the achievements of science for their own creative needs. The production of photographic equipment, optics, lighting devices is developing. In the arsenal of a modern photographer, there are many programs for processing and editing images. All this greatly expands human capabilities and allows every photography enthusiast to find their own path in art.

Types of photos

1) Black and white photography.

Historically the first kind of photography. After the advent of color and then digital photography, black and white photographs have retained their popularity. Often, color photographs are converted to black and white for artistic effect.

2) Color photography.

Color photography appeared in the middle of the 19th century. The first stable color photograph was taken in 1861 by James Maxwell using the three-color photography method (color separation method). Color separation is the division of a color image of the original into separate single-color, equal-scale images.

To obtain a color image using this method, three cameras with color filters installed on them (red, green and blue) were used. The resulting images made it possible to recreate a color image during projection (and later, in printing).

The second most important step in the development of the three-color photography method was the discovery in 1873 by the German photochemist Hermann Wilhelm Vogel of sensitizers, that is, substances capable of increasing the sensitivity of silver compounds to rays of various wavelengths. Vogel managed to obtain a composition that is sensitive to the green part of the spectrum (the distribution of the values of a physical quantity: energy, frequency or mass).

The practical application of three-color photography became possible after Vogel's student, the German scientist Adolf Miethe, developed sensitizers that make the photographic plate sensitive to other parts of the spectrum.

Along with the color separation method, other processes (methods) of color photography began to develop actively since the beginning of the 20th century. In particular, in 1907, the Lumiere Brothers' "Autochrome" photographic plates were patented and put on the free market, making it relatively easy to obtain color photographs. Despite numerous shortcomings (rapid fading of colors, fragility of plates, graininess of the image), the method quickly gained popularity and until 1935 50 million autochrome plates were produced in the world.

3) Snapshot.

A kind of photography that uses special photographic materials that have a more complex device than traditional ones. Such photographic materials contain built-in containers with reagents for the chemical treatment of photographic layers, and are automatically developed immediately after shooting, giving a ready-made positive image. The most famous manufacturer of such photo kits was the Polaroid company, whose founder, Edwin Land, invented the principle of image transfer.

4) Digital photography.

Digital photography is a relatively young but popular technology that originated in 1981 when Sony launched the Sony Mavica camera with a CCD that records images to disk. This device was not digital in the modern sense (an analog signal was recorded on the disk), but it made it possible to abandon photographic film. The first full-fledged digital camera - DCS 100 - was released in 1990 by Kodak.

Photo genres

In the 20th century, when the technique of photography improved enough, sufficiently sensitive photographic materials and convenient cameras appeared, photography turned from a technical curiosity into one of the types of fine art, related to painting, but different from it.

The special place and significance of photography in artistic culture is associated with the technical, scientific essence of photography. The most important property of photography is its authenticity, the authenticity of the captured events. At the same time, the image, as in painting or drawing, carries an artistic generalization, revealing the inner meaning of the situation shown, the character of the depicted person, and much more.

In essence, the photographer is an artist who has certain "colors" - photographic equipment and photographic materials. The photographer uses visual means of photography (shooting point, angle, linear composition, plan, perspective, lighting), related to the visual means of painting. An additional tool is chemical-photographic processing. Some modern genres of photography repeat the corresponding genres of painting, while others are specific only to photography.

The main genres of photography as art.

1) Portrait.

A portrait is an image or description of a person or a group of people that exists or existed in reality, including artistic means (painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, printing), as well as in literature and forensics (verbal portrait).

2) Still life.

Still life (fr. nature morte - "dead nature") - the image of inanimate objects in fine arts, in contrast to portrait, genre, historical and landscape subjects.

3) Landscape.

Landscape (French Paysage, from pays - country, locality) is a genre of fine art (as well as individual works of this genre), in which the main subject of the image is primordial or, to one degree or another, nature transformed by man. Modern ideas about the landscape have been formed over the centuries with the development artistic techniques for his image. In a landscape work, particular importance is attached to the construction of the perspective and composition of the view, the transfer of the state of the atmosphere, the air and light environment, and their variability.

4) Photo hunting.

Wildlife Photography is a type of photography in which birds, animals, insects and other creatures are taken in natural conditions. It combines three aspects - sport (therefore, it can also be considered as a new type of sport hunting, which appeared at the beginning of the 20th century and has become especially popular in our time); - cognitive, in which it merges with photography as a method scientific research in the field of biology, in which documentation is considered as a basic requirement; - artistic, since it forms one of the types of artistic photography as an art form - in this case, the aesthetic criterion becomes the main one for evaluating the results.

5) Macro photography.

Macro photography (from other Greek μακρός - large, large) - a type of photo, film or video filming, a feature of which is to obtain images of an object on a scale of 1: 2 - 20: 1 (that is, 1 centimeter of an image on a photosensitive material of a camera corresponds to 2 - 0.05 centimeters of the object).

More broadly, the term macro photography is used in cases of photographing from closer distances than the distances indicated on the distance scale of camera lenses (the minimum focusing distance for most lenses of SLR cameras is about 0.5 meters, for lenses of rangefinder cameras - about 1 meter).

Macro photography is the principle of forming an enlarged image. The lens creates a real enlarged image of the subject on any photosensitive material - photographic film, photographic plate, photographic paper, film or on electronic device(matrix digital camera or camcorder, TV camera vidicon). Microphotography is used to photograph smaller objects with an optical microscope.

6) Reporting.

Reporting - a message from the scene. A genre of journalism, the specificity of which is efficiency. In addition, this genre is characterized by impartial (without judgment) coverage of events and it is implied that the reporter is an eyewitness or participant in what is being described. The author of the report is not necessarily the protagonist of the event (although he may be, for example, in materials like “reporter changes profession”), but he is always an active observer and commentator of the action. The events in the reportage are not staged (as is sometimes thought), but are reproduced in their entirety. In other words, reportage is a genre that gives a visual representation of an event through the direct perception of the author - an eyewitness or participant in the event.

specific types of photography.

1) Aerial photography.

Aerial photography - photographing the territory from a height of hundreds of meters to tens of kilometers using an aerial camera installed on an atmospheric aircraft(airplane, helicopter, airship, etc. or their unmanned analogue).

The images obtained during aerial photography are especially applicable in cartography, in determining the boundaries of land holdings, species reconnaissance, archeology, and the study of environment production of films and commercials, etc.

2) Lomography.

Lomography is a genre of photography that aims to capture life in all its manifestations as it is in pictures. Lomographers look for beauty in a huge number of deliberately low-quality film shots taken from unusual angles.

For this purpose, an automatic, released in 1983, was originally used compact camera Leningrad optical-mechanical association "LOMO Compact - Automatic" ("LOMO LC-A"), where the name comes from. Supported and developed by the International Lomographic Society, headquartered in Vienna.

Lomography is about capturing the moment without regard to the traditional quality criteria of documentary photography, such as: sharpness, believable color reproduction, uniform frame density. This is a consequence of both the availability and simplicity of the device of most lomographic devices, and often low photographic literacy of some lomographs. Because of this, the concept of lomography is misinterpreted by some photographers and amateur photographers as some blurry low-quality amateur photographs. At exhibitions, lomographic images are mosaically grouped into lomo walls, and not only each individual frame, but also their totality, on which anything can be depicted, has artistic value.

3) Luminography.

Luminography is photography of luminous objects (sources of light, or reflections, which follows from the name (Latin lumen “light”, other Greek γράφω “I am writing”). In the West, the term Light painting is most often used to refer to this direction in the art of photography. .

There are two main methods of luminography: static and dynamic. General rule- long exposure time.
Static method: the camera is fixed - the light source is moving.
Dynamic method: the camera moves freely - the light source is stationary.
Mixed method: camera and light source are movable.

Luminography appears in the work of some artists in the first half of the twentieth century. The pioneers of this method were Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Gjon Mili and others. Then interest in it periodically flares up either in America or in Europe - Kamil Varga, Kensi Göpel and Jens Warneke from Germany, the Lichtfaktor and LAPP PRO groups, the American Darius are engaged in luminography Twin, Finn Hanu Huhtamo and others.

4) Underwater photography.

Underwater filming - film and photography various objects under water.
As a rule, it occurs with the use of special waterproof equipment, or with the help of a conventional camera or movie camera, placed in a box for underwater shooting or in a soft waterproof case.

A set for underwater shooting at shallow depths usually consists of a camera in a box and a stand-alone lighting device. Professional filming is carried out using several lighting devices with autonomous power sources, means of installing equipment on the ground or underwater vehicle, means of underwater transportation of equipment and means of communication between operators. Modern equipment makes it possible to shoot at depths that are inaccessible to man himself, thanks to the use of remote controls.

5) Light graphics.

Light graphics (eng. light graphic) or light painting (tracing paper from English light painting - drawing with light) is a style of photography, a technique for drawing with light.

The two main methods of light graphics are static and dynamic.

Static rendering method.
Monocomposition. The essence of the method is to draw an object with light from different sides. It is necessary to exclude any movement with the included light source. Only a directed short burst of light creates a neatly lit area and a natural shadow following it.
Multicomposition. Moving a render object to multiple (two or more) fixed positions. In one frame, the same character or object is drawn with light, in different positions.

Dynamic rendering method.
Moving light. Drawing with the help of light sources (light sabers) all kinds of improvisation in space. It is used to fill the background planes and to stylize the light sheet. Example: all kinds of inscriptions, ornaments, decorations.
Moving rendering plane, light shift (CC). This is a way of registering the light trace of the shifted plane.
Blurring. Directional light movement to remove texture and detail. The method is suitable for smoothing composition elements. When the light beam moves, the border of light-shadow is blurred.
Distortions and refractions. The results of this method are achieved using static rendering and reflective surfaces. Techniques for obtaining such an image are very similar to SS, but the results depend on the shape of the reflected objects.

All of the above methods are only parts of a single process. They are both independent and perfectly combined with each other.

6) Photo collage.

Photo collage (from French collage - gluing) is a technical technique in the visual arts, which consists in creating paintings or graphic works by gluing objects and materials that differ from the base in color and texture onto a base.

Collage is used mainly to obtain the effect of surprise from the combination of dissimilar materials, as well as for the emotional richness and sharpness of the work.

It is believed that Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso were the first to use the collage technique in art in 1910-1912. Kurt Schwitters was the first artist to work exclusively in the collage technique.

Photography today is not just a way to capture an important life moment. Thanks to a huge amount of high-end equipment and special programs, everyone has the opportunity to make photography their hobby. Artistic photography as a form of art is quite multifaceted. Even a beginner will be able to express their imagination to their heart's content. In this case, everyone will find their favorite genre.

A bit of history

Today, a digital camera is in every home. But a hundred years ago, photography was a real luxury. Few people know that a regular photograph is an image painted with light. Such a unique discovery came about thanks to several scientists. Before photography appeared in the form in which many people know it, a lot of work was done. The history of photography is interesting and exciting.

Attempts to obtain photographs were recorded as early as the 17th century. But they cannot be called successful. Artistic photography dates back to 1839. The French scientist Louis Daguerre managed to get a clear image of a person for the first time. In this case, the exposure time did not exceed a minute. Since then photography has been improved many times. Today we have the opportunity to create real masterpieces with minimal time.

How to create a unique photo?

Everyone can take a camera and take pictures of everything without prior settings. At the same time, it is most likely that you will not be able to get a beautiful picture. Those who want to become a real photographer should first learn how to properly select the contents of the frame. The light must be correctly selected, the lens adjusted. These rules are the same for any technique, regardless of whether you have to shoot with an old Zenith or the latest digital camera.

Becoming a professional photographer from the very first days is impossible. You will have to take a huge number of pictures before a real masterpiece is born. In this regard, digital technology has many advantages. An unsuccessful frame can be deleted at any time. Each novice photographer should identify for himself the genres of the art of photography, which he will pay attention to in the first place. To become a professional, you can not spray. It is rare to find a specialist who would be well versed in all branches of a particular field of activity.

Portrait

Portrait photography was born already when people learned how to take the first pictures. Here, artists tried to repeat the images of painting. The first portraits were quite expensive. Only aristocrats could afford them. They took pictures both on their own and with their family members. Some old photographs have survived to this day and are now in museums around the world.

A portrait is not only a picture of a face. If a person is depicted in full growth, this is also considered a portrait shot. Any school of photography primarily includes this genre in its course. Models can shoot both outdoors and indoors. It is important to

The main focus was on the individual. No details should distract attention.

Separately, it is worth noting the studio shooting. This type of portrait photography is relatively young. Previously, stars were shot in this way for fashion magazines. Today, everyone can please themselves with a photo shoot in the studio. Artistic photography in this case consists in the correct selection of the background and the organization of lighting.

Still life

This genre of photography also evolved from painting. Artists depicted beautifully arranged fruits and vegetables in their paintings. The image was supplemented with beautiful fabric and dishes. As soon as the first school of photography appeared, still life also began to be popular. From the French "nature morte" literally means "inanimate nature." Professional photographers, like artists, are able to beautifully convey to the viewer the meaning of the existence of certain inanimate objects.

For a long time, still life belonged to an unclaimed genre. The technique and art of photography were taught in schools for informational purposes only. With development information technologies still life became very popular. With it, photographers hone their professional skills. Besides, how can you remember an online store without product photos? After all, the image of a product is a still life.

Today, still life occupies one of the first places among all genres. The history of photography tells us that the emotional power of images of objects was not inferior to portrait shots before. On the this moment this trend has been lost. But without still life, the existence of online stores would be impossible.

Landscape

The classic genre that involves shooting nature is called landscape. This branch of the photography industry can be called the most emotional. It is from nature that every aspiring photographer can draw inspiration. And some of the pictures are so amazing that it's hard to take your eyes off them.

It is difficult for a beginner to master the landscape from the very first days. Anyone can take photos of the landscape. But the point is not to capture the moment. The state of mind of the photographer must be conveyed through the image. The process of finding a good shot can be complicated by various natural phenomena. Unlike a studio, bright sun, rain or strong winds can interfere with work outdoors. Sometimes a photographer has to work for weeks to get a really good shot.

Architecture

Like previous genres of photography, architecture was born almost immediately. There is a great resemblance to the landscape. The only difference is that the objects are various buildings and structures. There are also distinctive features. Great attention is paid to right choice shooting points. It is most advantageous to rent a building from a hill. For example, one house can be photographed from the roof of another.

Architecture is one of the most complex genres. Finding the right position is often complicated by traffic and weather conditions. In addition, it is not always possible to convey details through the camera lens. Shooting architecture requires expensive equipment.

reportage shooting

Today this genre is quite common. And reportage shooting began to become popular only in the second half of the 20th century. Few people know that pictures of various events and holidays are a reportage.

It is believed that the photographer simply shoots this or that event. In fact, reporting is an opportunity to convey not only the essence of certain actions, but also the attitude towards them. If we consider various genres of photography, then the report most accurately conveys the nature of the photographer, his emotional state and professionalism. If a protest is being filmed, for example, it is in the power of the photographer to show both sides in a positive light. An objective view of things is one of the most important character traits that a real photojournalist should have.

Household or genre photography

Transmission using the camera of everyday life belongs to genre photography. Quite often, images have a documentary basis. Genre photos are inherently very similar to reportage photos. A professional must convey life exactly as it is. The picture may show children playing, a grandmother cleaning the yard, a beggar begging, etc.

The difference between a genre photo is the ability to convey the emotional state of not only the photographer, but also the subjects themselves. In the picture you can see joy, tears, disappointment and anger. It could be like street photography, as well as an indoor shot.

Interior shooting

This genre of photography is indispensable today, although it is quite young. A ready-made interior, created by a professional designer, has its own emotional load. At the same time, the task of the photographer is to convey the idea completely without distortion. Interior photography is closely related to design. No professional would be able to create a portfolio of their work without the help of an experienced photographer.

The angle is very important in portrait photography. The right point determines how the room will look in the picture. In addition, one element allows you to decorate the entire space. Therefore, the photographer should pay special attention to the most advantageous details of the interior.

Reproduction

This genre of photography is not artistic. Despite this, it is important. There are a huge number of scanners with different technical specifications. But the photographer will be able to convey the essence of the picture more correctly. In addition, many old images require special treatment. The paint must not be touched again. Photography is the ability to accurately transfer an image onto paper. And some pictures are made so high quality that it can be quite difficult to distinguish a photo from the original.

Nude photography

The naked human body is a popular subject of filming today. In fact, this genre has been around for a long time. Everyone knows that artists liked to depict their women without clothes. As soon as the first artistic photograph appeared, the Nu style was born. This genre has occupied one of the most important places for many centuries.

Most often, the object of photography are girls. It can be both street photography and studio photography. The naked body in the pictures can only cause positive emotions. No anger or disgust.

Nude style is often intertwined with everyday photography. These genres of photography co-exist perfectly. For example, a naked girl can be depicted doing her daily chores or sunbathing on the beach.

avant-garde

As with any other sphere of life, photography can be approached in a non-standard way. Avant-gardism is a special genre of photography. It is characterized by going beyond the generally accepted aesthetics. To achieve their goals, the photographer can use the most non-standard means.

The avant-garde does not have any specific features, like other genres of photography. Therefore, the professionalism of the image is often quite difficult to track. The photographer can depict a “second reality”, which is in no way connected with the real world. In this case, the subject of shooting can be people, animals, household items and plants. And they will be depicted in an unusual form for others.

macro photography

This genre is very popular among beginner photographers. It involves obtaining an image at a certain scale. Many consider macro photography to be an opportunity to take pictures at a small distance from the subject. But it is not so. A high-quality picture can be obtained with special lenses. The technique for transferring objects on a large scale is quite expensive.

Macro photography allows you to capture the life of insects, small animals, as well as microorganisms. With the help of an expensive lens, you can even photograph a mosquito or a flea.

Non-standard genres of photography

There are types of filming that cannot be called generally accepted in professional circles. First of all, they include a self-portrait. Not a single photographer can take a good picture of himself. This genre is more suitable for amateurs. With the development of information technology, self-portrait began to enjoy great popularity. At the same time, in order to create a picture, most often they use a regular mobile phone.

You can also shoot landscapes with your smartphone. Photos are good for a home album. High-quality professional images should be created using appropriate equipment, which is not cheap. Still, it is advisable to start acquaintance with photography with a semi-professional SLR camera from the middle price category. Such equipment allows a novice photographer to get an idea about the genres of photography, as well as learn the basics.

Today we would like to talk with you about the two most, perhaps, most interesting trends in the art of photography - about genre photography and reportage photography. As a rule, the viewer only admires and enjoys landscape shots, portraits or still lifes. But the genre and reportage makes the viewer also think about the pictures. Think, sometimes, about quite serious problems.

Let's, first of all, define the concepts: what is genre photography and reportage photography? How do they differ from each other and what do they have in common?

A photo essay is, first of all, a photographer's report about some event, an event that he visited. But at the same time, it is also a kind of metaphor that should attract the attention of the viewer, encourage the viewer to think about what is shown in the pictures, make him develop his attitude to the current event, which is described in the report.

Working on a photo essay requires a certain amount of work experience from its author. You can't just shoot a report like that. To do this, you need to develop the ability to see the plot, to have knowledge about what you are shooting. For example, when shooting a report from a football match, you need to at least know the rules of the game of football. To shoot a report about a theatrical premiere, you need to know at least the basics of theatrical art ... Of course, to work in this genre, you need to master the photography technique perfectly.

A photographer engaged in reportage photography must not forget about the logic of the events taking place around him, know these events, correctly track and show the viewer the relationship of its elements and stages. An experienced master of photo reportage seems to be able to present a completely insignificant, trifling event to us as a bewitching, fantastic story. If you have already decided to dedicate your work to photo reporting, then you must develop the qualities of an interesting storyteller in yourself. But do not forget when working on a report about the author's vision of what is happening, about the author's subjectivism. After all, any reportage picture reflects not only the actual fact of the depicted event, but also the attitude of the author of the photo essay towards it. Simply put, the photographer, as it were, inclines the viewer to his point of view, only he does this not with ordinary words, but with the language of photography. Thus, he, without noticing it, is engaged in propaganda of the situation, the event that is unfolding in front of the lens of his camera. However, this can be done consciously and purposefully. But this is already, as they say, aerobatics.

Thus, one can easily come to a simple conclusion: a photo essay, or even just one reportage photo, is essentially just an interpretation. But she has to be honest. Without any juggling and deception of the viewer. This is simply unacceptable here.

But genre photography, unlike reportage photography, depicts scenes that take place around us in everyday life. Shows us images of the people around us. Here it is important for the photographer to be able to see and capture in time the unusual, bright moments of everyday life. Working on genre photography allows the photographer in his work to be interesting, mobile, in some ways even unusual, sensitive to what is happening. Genre photos can be safely called unique. After all, the stories imprinted on them will never be repeated again.

What is important to know and be able to do as a genre photographer?

The main thing is to learn not only to see what is happening, to notice everything interesting and unusual, extraordinary around you, but also to clearly understand what is happening right now in front of the camera lens. It is important to be able to choose the right shooting point, take a picture from a favorable angle, instantly, even in the process of shooting, have time to work on the composition of the frame, mentally scroll through the plot in your head and much more. All this comes with experience, with skill. In order to develop this skill in oneself, the photographer must work very hard. And this work will be rewarded. You will learn to shoot as if without thinking, on an intuitive level.

To the uninitiated or new to photography, it may seem that photo essay and genre photography are very similar in essence to each other. But this is a common misconception.

The main thing that distinguishes a genre shot from a reportage one is that a person is shown close-up on it. A close-up not in a compositional sense, not a face in a full frame, but in its semantic meaning. A person should be shown in all his experiences, emotions, mood. In genre photography, a person should, as it were, be snatched away by the photographer's gaze, by the click of a camera, from the general flow of events taking place in modern everyday life. A person with all his complexities, with his inner world - that's the main thing in genre photography. This is what is important to learn how to convey to the viewer.

Another sign distinguishing feature genre in photography is the warmth of intonation, a certain lyricism, softness, penetration. A good, skillfully made genre photograph is, one might say, a whole performance with its own dramaturgy. The viewer should feel like seeing what was before the photographer pressed the shutter button of the camera. And what will happen in a minute, in an hour, and even the next day…
