Canon conventionally divides its SLR cameras into three groups - for beginners, for enthusiasts and for professionals. Today's guest leads the beginner group, and it's the best consumer Canon camera you can buy today. However, before we part with a thousand American presidents, let's get to know the 700D better.

Design and ergonomics

From the first glance at the Canon 700D, it is clear that this is a representative of digital photography classics. The black case looks strict, no "trinkets". Exterior materials deserve all praise: plastic is pleasant to the touch, without a hint of cheapness.

The device is built according to the classical scheme of amateur cameras - without an additional LCD display on the top panel. On the right is a moderately tight wheel for selecting shooting modes without a lock, coaxially with it is the power switch. Like other modern Canon models, it includes a video shooting mode.

To select the ISO value, there is a separate hardware button, next to it is the parameter change wheel and the Shutter button.

The artificial lighting unit consists of a pop-up flash and a hot shoe for on-camera flash or synchronizer. There is also a stereo microphone. The built-in flash pop-up is "electric": when the camera's power is off, it will not pop up.

On the rear panel, a rotary touch LCD display with two degrees of freedom: in the stowed position, you can protect the screen from possible damage.

The most important operational adjustments are made on the hardware buttons: exposure compensation, white balance, drive modes and autofocus control, including manual selection of the phase sensor point.

The only complaint is that I would prefer the metering mode control to the hardware image style button in JPEG, after all, this has to be done more often.

The memory card is installed in the compartment on the right panel of the body - you can change the card even if the device is mounted on a tripod.

The battery is traditionally located in the shaft on the bottom of the case. The tripod socket is located on the optical axis of the lens.

The front panel has only a timer indicator, flash pop-up buttons and aperture repeater, both of which are to the left of the lens.

There are two plugs on the left panel that cover the sockets for connecting a wired remote control (there is only one IR signal receiver for the infrared remote control and it is on the battery handle, in front), a microphone, HDMI and USB.

The mass of the camera without a lens with a battery and a memory card is 580 g - a little, this is especially felt after a day's photo walk.

Rubber pads not only frame the battery grip, but are also located under the thumb.

The location of the controls is well thought out, the owners of even fairly large palms can comfortably hold the device with one hand, and without the help of the left hand, you can change almost all the most important settings.

Functionality

The Canon 700D is equipped with an 18-megapixel (5184 x 3456) 22.3 x 14.9 mm CMOS sensor with built-in phase information for focusing needs. The crop factor is 1.6.

The ISO sensitivity range extends from 100 to 6400 in video and 12800 in photos, there is a “doubler” up to 25600.

The 14-bit DIGIC 5 processor is responsible for data processing.

Shutter with electronic control provides a range of shutter speeds from 30 to 1/4000 s, which allows you to implement most creative techniques, with the exception, perhaps, of ultra-high-speed shooting (but amateurs do not indulge in such things). If in bright sunlight you need to open the aperture of a fast lens as much as possible, just buy a good neutral density filter, it will come in handy when shooting with long exposure under normal lighting.

The burst speed in both RAW and JPEG reaches 5 fps - the result is not outstanding, but other cameras are bought for reporting and sports photography, and the 700D perfectly fulfills “everyday” situations.

difference in buffer capacity. For RAW, this is 6 frames (i.e. a little more than a second of the event), for JPEG it is already 22 (almost four seconds, this is really a lot). After filling, the speed drops to 1.2-1.5 fps, the test was carried out with a fast Kingston 64 GB SDXC UHS-I U3 card.

The optical viewfinder with diopter correction shows approximately 95% of the area of the future frame, the magnification is x0.85. The viewfinder is quite bright, although the brightness drops a little at the edges. If you are not satisfied with these figures, just switch to Live View mode, there is a tenfold increase and you can temporarily increase the sensitivity.

The proximity sensor of the photographer's face works well, it turns off the LCD screen when looking through the optical viewfinder.

There are actually two phase sensors for automatic focusing.

The classic "mirror" nine-point, similar to the one installed in the higher class 60D camera, with all points cruciform. Their location in the frame is good, both golden section lines and quarters are captured. The choice can be entrusted to automation, or you can do it yourself, the selection is carried out by the wheel while the button is pressed, there is an indication in the optical viewfinder.

The main complaint concerns the backlight: there is no constant light, instead it uses a flash in strobe mode, this can frighten a child or draw unwanted attention to the photographer.

The second sensor is the matrix itself, in which elements for determining the phase of light are integrated.

As already mentioned, the autofocus system in Live View mode and when shooting video is not completely phase, it is hybrid, i.e. phase information is used for coarse focusing, and finally the sharpness is adjusted using the contrast method.

The speed and accuracy of focusing in mirror mode is commendable - even in low light, the camera performs well. But engineers still have to work on the hybrid system. The fact that it is - a definite plus. The accuracy of the work is high, during the test, misses occurred at the level of statistical error. But the speed leaves much to be desired.

The DIGIC 5 processor allowed Canon engineers to add a number of interesting features of "computational" photography - HDR, shooting without a tripod in low light conditions, lens distortion correction (vignetting, chromatic aberration).

Noise suppression at high ISO values occurs when four successively made at short exposures frames into one. The main condition is the absence of moving objects.

3-inch LCD display with 1,040,000 pixels, Clear View II TFT matrix. The image quality is excellent, if you turn the brightness to the maximum, then shooting in bright sunlight will not create problems.

The sensor is made using capacitive technology. The sensitivity is high, as is the positioning accuracy. Simple gestures are supported, two-finger touch is recognized.

The LP-E8 battery allows you to take approximately 550 shots on a single charge.

Image quality

As usual, raw files from the camera, JPEG and RAW, can be downloaded for self-study at this link.

Automatic white balance gives correct color reproduction in most shooting situations. At standard settings, the saturation is normal, only in red colors you sometimes want to lower it a little.

Noise is no longer a problem in digital photography below ISO 3200. That is why there are no files with ISO 200-1600 among the examples. Starting with ISO 3200, the deterioration in quality becomes noticeable. The nature of the noise is traditional for Canon devices - soft and unobtrusive. If you like a "sleek" picture, just set the maximum amount of noise reduction through the menu: the examples are made with medium settings.

JPEG files allow you to print a normally exposed photo taken at ISO 6400 at 20x30 cm. The only problem is the narrowing of the dynamic range in the shadows, which means that fine details will be lost there.

Do some magic with RAW and you can get a hard copy of the same size from a file made at ISO 12800. Yes, noise will be visible, as well as general sluggishness due to the reduced dynamic range. However, some five years ago, a similar result was at ISO 800, and this is four stops of exposure!

Video

The device shoots Full HD-video at a frequency of up to 30 fps with progressive scan. On the big screen, the picture looks good, the colors are natural and not flashy. When shooting at high ISO values, noise naturally becomes noticeable, but they do not spoil the image.

Equipment

The Ukrainian market offers several variants of delivery kits. They are distinguished by the presence / absence of a lens and its model.

When preparing the material, we used a kit with an excellent universal lens 18-135 / 3.5-5.6 with an optical stabilizer and an STM drive, which provides silent and smooth focusing when shooting video.

It is an ideal choice for those who are not ready to purchase several lenses: the range of equivalent focal lengths covers the most commonly used segment 28-200 mm, and the dimensions and weight, although larger than the “ordinary” whale lens, look very attractive compared to professional optics.

Results

The Canon EOS 700D is a great DSLR for the hobbyist and a second (backup) for the professional, the 700D has confirmed Canon's reputation as a high-end maker of equipment.

Position in the line

1100D- 700D - 60D

Canon EOS 700D is extremely similar to the previous model of the line, Canon 650D. Changes are so minimal that in one of the reviews the author rightly called the release of the 700D "the most insignificant upgrade we have ever seen among models in this class."

In the Live View mode, you can now see the result of the future application of Artistic filters directly on the screen in the process of switching them. Actually, this is how it should be, but this was not implemented in the 650D. Further, the icons on the mode dial of the 700D are made convex, the set of modes has changed slightly, and the dial itself rotates in a circle without a limiter (in the 650D, the disk rotated back and forth within a certain sector, but not in a circle). There are other small differences, the shape of the body has changed slightly, but by and large this is all.

Like the EOS 650D, the Canon 700D uses a "Hybrid CMOS" sensor, some of whose pixels are used for phase detection autofocus, allowing the camera to roughly determine the distance and then fine-tune it using contrast autofocus. As a result, in movie and Live View shooting modes, autofocus adjusts faster and can successfully track the movement of the subject. This is what the hybrid CMOS sensor and phase detection autofocus sensor look like:

The touch screen installed in the Canon 700D does not respond to pressure, but to touch. Smartphone users will find it easy to get used to both being able to scroll through photos and using the multi-touch zoom feature. Using the screen, you can control all the functions and shooting options, and in the Live View and Movie modes, you can focus and even press the shutter button.

Canon 700D There are two modes that use compound exposure to create images: these are "HDR backlight” and “Handheld Night Shot”. There are also several digital processing effects.

Apparently, the 700D model will replace the 650D, which it is so similar to and which will cease production, while the previous 600D will remain in the line. And, of course, the younger 1100D and 100D.

In fact, it was not the Canon 700D camera itself that became a major upgrade, but the new lens that now comes in the kit with the 700D, namely the Canon EF-S 18-55mm F / 3.5-5.6 IS STM. Previously, two STM lenses were released with the 650D, namely the EF-S 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM and the EF 40mm F/2.8 STM.

All these autofocus lenses use linear stepper motors (linear stepper motors, hence the abbreviation STM in their names). Such motors are widely used in lenses for mirrorless cameras, they are optimized for contrast autofocus systems, and their main advantage is fast and silent operation during video shooting.

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens is equipped with a "Dynamic IS" system specifically designed to compensate for specific camera shake experienced during movie shooting (such as when you walk and shoot video). According to the manufacturer, the stabilizer provides compensation up to 4 exposure steps.

The lens has a seven-blade aperture and provides a minimum focusing distance of 25 cm. Physically, it is slightly longer than the 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 IS II, and its dimensions are minimal in the middle of the focal length range, and at the edges of the range it extends (and not much, less than a centimeter ).

During focusing, the front lens does not rotate. The manual focus ring works smoothly and precisely, thanks to (or despite) an electromechanical drive (focus-by-wire). By the way, the other two Canon STM lenses have the same drive.

Looking ahead a bit, the new Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens made a great impression. When shooting movies, it focuses very quietly, and during normal work with the optical viewfinder - very quickly. Our measurements of the Canon 700D's autofocus speed combined with the 18-55/3.5-5.6 IS STM showed one of the best results we've ever tested.

In tests of resolution at different focal lengths and aperture values, the new lens showed, although not amazing (which is not surprising given its class), but very decent results. You can read the details in the overview section Image quality - resolution. And if you consider that in the latest Canon DSLRs (including the EOS 700D) chromatic aberrations and vignetting are corrected by software, then there are practically no complaints about the resulting images from this side.

In general, the lens is very fast and of sufficient quality. Perhaps the only inconvenience that you experience with it when shooting video is that it is not always possible to ensure smooth zooming, because it is done manually using a mechanical ring, which sometimes gets stuck a little, and small jerks are obtained on the recording. It would be nice to add the ability to switch the zoom to electromechanical mode, but this would complicate and increase the cost of the lens design.

In early April, Canon announced the release of a new model in the line of digital SLR cameras of the XXXD series Canon EOS 700D. The other day, this camera came to me for review as part of the Supernova program conducted by DNS ....

What is this novelty from the leading manufacturer of cameras? As soon as the technical specifications became known, verbal battles began at many photo forums about the advisability of releasing this camera. Specifications of this model are almost identical to those produced by Canon EOS 650D. Accordingly, the question arises Why is this all? Let's try to figure it out.

1. Packing and scope of delivery

The scope of delivery, the color scheme of the packaging, etc. do not differ from any other camera from this company.
A cardboard box made in red and white colors with a description of the main characteristics, a color image of the device itself.

In the box is again a standard set:

 the camera itself ("Canon EOS 700D"),
 lens ("Canon 18-55 IS STM"),
 boot disks with software,
 charger (LC-E8E),
 battery (Canon LP-E8),
 interface cable (IFC-130U),
 neck strap (EW-100BIV),
 instruction in Russian, compact instruction.
As you can see, nothing superfluous, everything is just the most necessary to start exciting activity like a photograph.

2. Appearance and main governing bodies

What is the actual camera?
The appearance of the camera immediately tells which of the cameras was taken as a basis - 650d.

Although it should be noted from the front side of the Canon cameras they look like hatchery chickens. Steel mount for Canon EF and Canon EF-S format lenses (no problems with lenses are expected, because there is a wide choice of not only "native" glasses, but also third-party lenses).
The main controls and setting keys are located as follows

The upper part of the camera, where the shooting mode dial, flash, microphones, also does not differ from its predecessor Canon 650d. The only difference is that the mode selection wheel rotates 360 degrees without restriction - which is very convenient when changing modes - no need to “drive” the switch back and forth.

There is no light information display - this is the prerogative of cameras more than high level.
The rear layout of the controls can also be called “classic”: the screen (on this model it is touch and rotary), a four-way joystick with a central key,

above and below are the view and delete buttons, the settings control keys. At the top of the panel are the Menu, Info keys

The memory card slot is located on the right side, under the plastic cover. Accordingly, on the left, under the rubber plugs, there are connectors for connecting an external microphone and a remote control, a microHDMI video output and a USB interface. The battery compartment is located on the bottom of the camera.

Case material – metal/plastic. The coating is very pleasant to the touch, the hand does not slip, and the handle provides a comfortable grip. By the way, the presence of plastic is due to the fact that this model can be equipped with a GPS receiver, and for normal operation it is necessary not to shield the space with metal (usually the upper part of the camera).

3. Specifications of the camera and lens

Camera Specifications
- Canon EF/EF-S mount
- matrix 18.5 megapixels (22.3 x 14.9 mm)
- shooting video resolution up to 1920x1080
- 3" swivel touch screen
- camera weight without lens 580 g
- maximum resolution 5184 x 3456
- Sensitivity 100 - 6400 ISO, Auto ISO, ISO6400, ISO12800, ISO25600 (not in all modes)
- type of memory cards SD, SDHC, SDXC

Lens specifications
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
optical design - 13 elements in 11 groups
mount - EF-s
image stabilizer - 4-stop optical and dynamic (movie only)
number of aperture blades - 7
focal length range - 18-55 mm
diagonal viewing angle from 74°20" to 27°50"
maximum aperture - f / 3.5-f / 5.6
minimum aperture - f / 22-f / 38
minimum focusing distance 0.25m.
filter diameter - 58 mm
dimensions - - 69.0 mm and 75.2 mm
weight - 205 g

We figured out the characteristics, but the answer to the question - What's new here? Alas, it has not yet been found. Let's take a look deeper.

4. Autofocus and ISO

The appearance of a hybrid autofocus system in the previous camera (the sensor combines both contrast and phase sensors) and the possibility of touch control were appreciated by all amateurs. Exactly the same mechanism was implemented in this model (why invent something else when everything is already there).

The autofocus system in the camera is represented by 3 types of focusing.
1. Face+tracking. With this setting, the camera automatically detects people's faces and focuses on them. If a person makes a movement, then the focus shifts after him. Apparently this is tracking autofocus.
2. FlexiZone-Multi. In this mode, the camera can use up to 31 focus points to cover the maximum area of the frame. We should not forget about the aspect ratio and the number of focus points:
a) 3:2 uses 31 dots, b) 1:1 and 4:3 uses 25 dots, c) 16:9 (FullHD mode) uses 21 dots.

3. FlexiZone-Single. This mode uses 1 focus point, the location and size of which you set yourself.

The camera, like its predecessor, has an 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, DIGIC 5 processor, and top speed continuous shooting up to 5 frames per second (of course, here you also need to take into account the type of memory card installed in the camera). The Canon 700D raised the operating ISO threshold over its predecessor. Now the ISO range is 100-12800 (expandable to ISO 25600 but not in all custom settings). How to expand the basic settings is described in the instructions for the camera on page 92.
You can see an example of the camera working at high ISO values below.

The autofocus sensor contains nine cross-shaped points, which allows you to perform the most accurate focusing in automatic mode throughout the frame. The presence of phase sensors of the first series allows continuous focusing without the need to lower/raise the mirror, i.e. in Liveview mode or while recording a movie.

5. Camera operation and video shooting

Swivel screen and touch control - these things I did not like right away, BUT It's my personal opinion.
Rotary display loved by many amateur photographers - yes, it gives some convenience when shooting from uncomfortable positions by pointing the lens through the display screen and not the viewfinder. But personally, the presence of an additional swivel in the chamber does not give me anything but anxiety. I prefer to form the letter "Zu" but have a regular fixed display on the camera. But this is everyone's business.

Touch control system quite convenient and simple. The sensitivity of the rotary touch panel is very high, just lightly touch the screen.
Management is as simple and intuitive as possible. In Liveview mode (actually for this mode, the touch panel was created): when you click on the parameter icon, a scale of set values pops up with a cursor.
But no one has canceled the manual mode yet - it’s much more convenient for me to work using the buttons than to poke a finger at the screen :)
Shooting video. Shooting a video is quite simple and convenient. Switching the camera from photo mode to video mode is carried out by switching the enable flag to the corresponding position. When shooting a video, you can press the shutter button to take a photo without moving the switch to the appropriate position. The autofocus is really silent and quite accurate. Autofocus is quite "clunky" and focusing takes literally a matter of moments. Below are 2 videos taken with this camera. Sorry for the complete lack of a plot, but the videographer from me is terrible :-[

the second fragment just shows how long it took AF to fully focus on the subject

Shooting with preset camera settings and filters.
The Canon EOS 700D is equipped with a series of preset semi-automatic modes designed for novice users and preset filters for creativity.

fisheye effect (fish-eye)

oil painting effect

baby camera effect

"til-shift" effect (unfortunately I did not find a high enough place for a better shot)
You can see the final result on the camera display even before the shutter is released.
In addition to creative filters, the camera has preset shooting modes

landscape

macro (close-up shot)

shooting in HDR (backlight) mode. In this mode, the camera takes a series of 3 frames, then combining them into one.

sport mode

mode night shooting

Pictures can be recorded simultaneously in two versions: the original and the processed picture. The presence of built-in help that explains what and why will greatly help beginners in mastering the camera.

6. A little about the lens.

Now all new, whale kits for the amateur camera segment from Canon (and there are currently two of them. These are Canon 700d and Canon 100d) are equipped with the new Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.
Its distinguishing feature is the new focus motor. It is ahead of the USM drive in pointing speed, takes up much less space in the lens body and does not create unnecessary vibrations and sound noise (such information from the manufacturer's website).
This stepper motor (STM) lens pairs well with the new hybrid focusing method to achieve smooth yet very fast tracking autofocus in video recording while avoiding harsh noise and 9cm noise. above in the text).
Out of habit, the work of "zoom" can be a little confusing. With a minimum FR, the “trunk” does not go into the body of the lens, but protrudes somewhere by 1 cm. from the edge. At FR 35, it is completely hidden in the body of the lens, and when the FR is increased to 55, it extends again. Reminds me how it works sewing machine. The disadvantages of this lens include a plastic mount - so be more careful in operation.

7. Bottom line

Summing up in this review, I made several conclusions about this product.
1. The camera is perfect for those amateurs who want to get an all-in-one and a "DSLR" and a video camera. I think the technical solutions of this camera will satisfy such a desire. Especially with the STM lens which is more video than photo.
2. The camera will fully satisfy the need of people who want to get beautiful pictures without plunging into the wilds of post-image processing. Compact size, light weight, a fairly wide range of settings will allow you to use the camera both at home and while traveling.

I think it makes no sense to compare this model with its predecessor (EOS 650d). the cameras are identical in their characteristics - we can say that Canon specialists carried out some restyling of an already released model (but, alas, I could not understand why this was done).
And to talk about the minuses and fatal flaws (there are minor ones, but these are nothing more than nitpicking) - alas, this takes much more time than the camera was in my review.

Now the price of this model, I think is very high, but I think that within 1-3 months it will drop significantly. Also by this time, the 650D camera will disappear from the windows and the Canon 700D will take its place (in fact, it was planned). Well, that's all. Thank you for reading my review, I hope the information will be useful.
Special thanks to the DNS company for the opportunity to take part in the Supernova project and for providing the equipment for writing a review.

What did you like

Real tracking autofocus on video shooting, STM lenses

What did not like

My first SLR, so I have nothing to compare with. There are no obvious bugs.
Broken pixel on the matrix, but so far it does not interfere.
A typical Canon chip - the charge indicator shows half, which means the battery is empty. Will turn off soon. I noticed on 5 models of different levels.
Somewhat pricey.

What did you like

For me - a comfortable body, although I may just be used to Canon. For a long time I went to different points, trying different models, including Nikon. The model is considered entry-level, but I have not yet mastered everything. The kit lens 18-135 IS STM is certainly not good, but this kit will allow you to show the capabilities of the camera, unlike the 18-55 IS STM.

What did not like

Misses. But maybe it's the photographer. When shooting a video, sharpness walks, but this is probably normal for DSLRs.

What did you like

Autofocus, Photo and video quality. STM lens.

What did not like

Battery! For such a price, the camera quickly sits down! This is the main downside! Before that it was 1100, so he takes much more pictures than 700 ....

What did you like

If you love making videos, get it! I advise!

What did not like

In my opinion, 440 shots are not enough on one battery charge, I would like more;

What did not like

After a few months of use, I did not find any flaws

What did you like

Touch screen: it is very convenient to set the focus point when shooting video - swivel screen - shoots well at night without a tripod - light - fast autofocus

What did not like

Poor shooting on full auto
In the focus mode on the screen (life view) - it takes a long time to focus, but this mode is pampering.
Problems with focus in video when zooming hard.
Heavy for women.
Shooting on the machine - the focus smears, focuses anywhere but not on faces.

What did you like

Whale I have 18-135 STM ISO 6400 working Touch screen multi-touch Rotating screen video 1080 with stm lens silently 18-135 universal lens intuitive setting of user modes Battery is average.

What did not like

Plastic, large standard glass, control of only one flash, weak buffer - in RAW, the burst is no more than 2 frames even with very fast cards (Kingston UHS-I was tested with a recording speed of 80 Mb / s), after which, of course, it waits for it to record on the card to restart the streak. Normal series only in JPEG. Many functions, such as setting your own BB, are buried in the menu. Low maximum sensitivity

What did you like

Autofocus, weight, compactness (for a DSLR), matrix, good lens in a kit, comfortable grip, touch screen, high-quality uncompressed video, correct face tones, fast autofocus on the screen, including video mode. There are external ports for a microphone, etc. A wonderful bright viewfinder.
